Kui ettepanek võetakse liikmesriikide poolt vastu, siis suunatakse lisarahastust tehisintellekti, kübertehnoloogia jt valdkondade edendamisse. Programm aitaks samuti edendada digiharidust ja digitaalset infrastruktuuri. Kuidas peaks see programm täpselt välja nägema? Kas Euroopa Liit suudab järele jõuda USA superarvutitele?

Digital Europe: Can it bridge Europe’s IT gap?

In May 2018, the European Commission proposed a €9.2 billion programme to boost European competitiveness in digital technologies: Digital Europe. If approved, it will plow extra funding into developing and deploying state of the art supercomputing, artificial intelligence and cyber-security technologies, as well as promoting digital skills and infrastructure. It would work alongside earlier-stage R&D funding inside its sister programme, Horizon Europe. But how would this programme work, exactly? And after decades of Europe trailing US ICT competitors, is this really going to make a difference?

Innovation engines: A roadmap towards a healthier Europe

For every new drug or medical device that hits the market, hundreds of potential medicines or potential new technologies fall by the wayside. What are the current barriers to improve R&I in Europe in the health(care) sector? How to speed up the transition from discovery to market? What is the role of the EU and collaboration platforms to accelerate healthcare innovation?
As negotiations around the European Commission’s proposal for Horizon Europe are underway, this event will be a unique opportunity for a high-level debate aiming to evaluate the current state of play and establish a set of recommendations to move towards a more coherent EU innovation strategy for health in the years to come.

Energiapoliitika ei täida kõiki eesmärke, kui sotsiaal- ja humanitaarteaduste panusega ei ole arvestatud. Kodanike huvid peavad olema energiapoliitika loomise keskmes. 22. jaanuaril toimuval konverentsil arutatakse sotsiaalteaduste tähtsust süsinikheidete vähendamisel ja kliimamuutustega võitlemisel.
Üritus toimub Horisont 2020 projekti SHAPE ENERGY raames. Konverentsil kohtuvad kõrgtasemeliste paneelide osalejad ning poliitikakujundajad, et arutada investeeringuid ja edasisi plaane sotsiaalteaduste integreerimiseks energiapoliitika valdkonnas.

Designing future energy policies: Social sciences and humanities to accelerate the energy transition

Energy policies cannot fulfil their maximum potential if the knowledge stemming from social sciences and humanities research is not factored into the decision-making process. Citizens should be at the core of all policies, including those to do with energy. This conference will underline how crucial social knowledge is to accelerating the decarbonisation of our economy and making a real dent in climate change.
The event is organised as part of the SHAPE ENERGY H2020 EU-funded project. It will bring the perfect opportunity for a wide range of high level panellists and senior stakeholders to connect the dots, debate the key issues and think through on the political and social changes as well the necessary research and innovation investments needed to further integrate social sciences in the future of policymaking.

Suurbritannia eeldatava lahkumine Euroopa Liidust (Brexit) tuleva aasta märtsikuus mõjutab tugevalt teaduse ja innovatsiooni maastikku. Teaduskoostöö on üks edukamatest EL-i ettevõtmistest, kuid Brexiti tõttu võivad Suurbritannia teadlased kaotada võimaluse osaleda EL-i raamprogrammis ja liikumisvabaduse ning tekitada probleeme teaduse ja innovatsiooniga seotud seadusloomes.
Sellegipoolest on mitmed Suurbritannia ja teiste EL-i riikide partnerid otsustanud luua strateegilised koostööprojektid, mis vähendaksid Brexiti mõju nende tööle. Nende partnerluste abil saavad mõlemad osapooled kaitsta aastakümneid kestnud koostöö pärandit ning töötada samamoodi edaspidigi jätkusuutliku Euroopa suunas.

Beyond Brexit: New approaches to sustaining UK-EU partnerships in science, technology & innovation

The UK’s prospective withdrawal from the EU in March 2019 has cast a shadow over the research and innovation landscape. Cross-border scientific collaboration has been one of the undoubted success stories of the European project to date. Yet many uncertainties remain, from access to the EU’s framework programmes and mobility of talent to the impacts on industrial R&D networks and regulatory alignment.
Against this backdrop, new strategic alliances are being established between leading UK actors and European counterparts. In part, this can be seen as a way to mitigate various risks surrounding the Brexit process. However, it is also about protecting a critical legacy of partnership and established value chains, and the continued co-creation of breakthrough science and technologies for a sustainable European future.
